Grace Siu was not only a dominant Ontario College Women’s Badminton Singles player during her career, she was easily the most popular and recognizable varsity athlete of her time at Mohawk College. A fierce competitor who trained relentlessly in preparing herself for championship competition, Grace excelled when the going got tough. Grace captured two OCAA gold medals in 1993 and 1994, one OCAA silver medal in 1992 and the CCAA bronze medal in 1994 to cap it all off. There were many other victories, but it would be impossible to list Grace’s multiple open, invitational and OCAA Regional Championships during her three year period. Grace was chosen as the Outstanding Female Freshman Athlete of the Year in 1991 and the Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year in 1992 and 1993. Her outstanding athletic ability was matched by her personality, sportsmanship and her academic achievements. “Amazing” Grace, as she was known, was an OCAA All Academic and CCAA Academic All Canadian and captured the Mountaineers highest varsity honour, the Dr. Sam Mitminger Award, upon graduation from Information Systems in 1994.
