Dewitt Hanna was a walk-on athlete for the men's basketball program and Mohawk's first non-canadian athlete to play for the Mountaineers leaving a huge mark on the program. DeWitt was a member of the men's basketball team which captured OCAA gold in the 1970-1971 season. DeWitt was named an OCAA Legue All-Star and OCAA Championship All-Star for his efforts in the 70/71 campaign. Hanna's 1971-1972 season brought another OCAA gold medal to the Mountaineers, with DeWitt being named an OCAA League and Championship All-Star. For his success in the 71/72 season, Dewitt was selected as the team MVP and Mountaineer Outstanding Male Athlete of the Year. DeWitt played an integral part in a historical moment in men's basketball, when the Mohawk Mountaineers basketball team became the first College team to defeat a Canadian University team.
