The Mohawk Mountaineers cross country teams brought the heat again this weekend at the second OCAA Invitational of the year. The men's team finished the day claiming bronze for the second time while the women came fourth.

"The men are really looking solid in third place," said Mountaineers head coach David Hopton. "We're looking for a bronze at the OCAA Championships now and anything less would be a disappointment."

Hopton adds that the team knows they can do it, and the focus will be on staying healthy over these next two weeks.

The women's team had a strong showing and have a good chance at a podium at the OCAA Championships if everyone stays healthy as well.

"Our best chance at a medal is as a team, and it's going to take a strong performance from everyone to get both teams on the podium," Hopton said.

While Jacob Chant (30:11) and Annie Sterenberg (26:58.4) were the top runners for the Mountaineers, Stefania Salzer (28:01.1) stole the show.

"Stefania had the race of her life, and is excited for redemption on the finishing chute in two weeks," Hopton said.

Hopton also added that Ben Yalin (30:46) did amazing during the men's race, surprising everyone after a fast start, hanging on well through the middle of the race and closing with a strong final lap.

Matias Tessel (30:11.8) and Ashley Lof (27:32.3) continue to be bright spots for the Mountaineers as well.

The Mountaineers will race next on Oct. 30 at the OCAA Championships in Etobicoke.
