Mountaineers win bronze medal at 2022-23 OCAA Championship

Mountaineers win bronze medal at 2022-23 OCAA Championship

For the second straight season the Mohawk Mountaineers women's volleyball program has won a medal at the OCAA Championship. The Mountaineers defeated the Seneca Sting 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-23) to earn the 2022-23 bronze medal.

Mohawk played a complete team-effort match to earn the victory, holding onto small leads throughout.

First-year head coach Kelsey Kovar spoke to how proud she was of her squad for bouncing back from a tough OCAA semi-final loss and playing their hearts out to win bronze.

"I know this year wasn't exactly the way it went last year," Kovar said. "It was a little bit rocky, we had our ups and downs, but honestly it feels so good to preform when we needed to preform."

Seneca controlled a majority of the third set, jumping out to a 10-3 lead as it looked like a fourth set would be forced. However, the Mountaineers just found ways to hang around and chipped away at the lead.

The Sting were two points away from winning the set, leading 23-19 but the Mountaineer continued to claw and scored six straight points to win the set and the match.

"We stayed together," Kovar said about the third set. "Even when Seneca was starting to push back and score against us, we just kept our head down and grinded, and did what we needed to do on our side."

Yvonne Mann (Kitchener, ON) was named Mohawk's Player of the Game with 26 assists and nine digs.

Anika Gatto (Coquitlam, BC) was honoured as an OCAA Championship All-Star and had 17 digs in the match.

Irene Jaramillo (Manizales, CO) led the Mountaineers with 11 kills.

This is the first-time since the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons that the women's volleyball program at Mohawk has won consecutive provincial medals.
