Mountaineers sweep Condors; advance to OCAA semifinals

For the second consecutive season Mohawk Mountaineers women's volleyball is heading to the OCAA semi-final match following a 3-0 (25-18, 25-8, 25-13) over the Conestoga Condors in the quarterfinals.

It was a complete game effort for the Mountaineers, who kept their foot on the pedal for the entire game. Going back to regular season Mohawk has now won six straight matches.

"We've peaked at the right time in the season and we've been played really good volleyball for the second half of the season," said head coach Kelsey Kovar. "I knew the energy and attitude we had going, and the confidence, we were going to win the game."

With both the Mohawk women and men's teams advancing, it will be the first-time since the 2010-11 season both programs will be represented in the semi-finals.

"It means we have a bright future ahead of us," said Kovar. "I know that both of the programs are super talented this year, but it's always nice to get that recognition or to be competing for medals because it's going to attract quality athletes to our programs."

Kovar was impressed with the Mountaineers serving versus the Condors, adding that everyone played an important role.

"Every single player contributed something to the game," Kovar said. "If someone wasn't contributing in one area, they were finding a way to do something else in another area."

Irene Jaramillo (Manizales, CO) was named OCAA Player of the Game.

The Mountaineers semi-final match will be played at 8 p.m. at Sheridan College. They'll play the winner of the quarter-final match between the Durham Lords and Sheridan Bruins.
