Playoff Preview: Mountaineers head to North Bay for OCAA crossover round

After finishing the 2022-23 season with an 11-7 record, Mohawk Mountaineers women's volleyball is riding a four-game win streak into the OCAA playoffs set to begin this weekend.

The Mountaineers will travel to North Bay, ON as the fifth seed in the OCAA West Division to play the OCAA East third place Canadore Panthers. The match is scheduled for 4 p.m. and will be streamed on OCAA Live.

The Matchup:

It was a roller coaster of a season for the Mountaineers under first-year head coach Kelsey Kovar. Mohawk jumped out to 5-0 start to the season, but would lose their next six. They would closeout the season winning six of their final seven, and the lone loss was a five setter to the No. 2 nationally ranked Humber Hawks.

Canadore concluded the season with one-win better than the Mountaineers with a 12-6 record in the east division. However, after winning 11 of their first 13, the Panthers would lose four straight before closing out the season with a three-set win over the win-less Fleming Knights.

Playoff History:

Only a season ago the Mountaineers earned their way to the OCAA Championship match, ultimately coming away with a silver medal. It was Mohawk's first-time competing for gold in 42-years. And while the program won numerous medals between the 2001-02 and 2009-10 seasons, it was also their first OCAA medal in 11 seasons.

For the Panthers this is their fifth consecutive season making the playoffs. And last year they made it to the OCAA semi-finals and played in the bronze medal match.

What Happened Last Time:

The last time these two teams played a match was in the regular season way back on January 11, 2013. Mohawk came out on top with a 3-0 win.

What's on the Line:

Winner of this match will head to Oakville, ON between Feb. 23-25 to play in the OCAA Championship tournament and will play the winner of Conestoga or La Cite in the quarterfinals.
