Game Preview: Mountaineers look to get back to winning ways versus Saints

Mohawk Mountaineers women's volleyball is off to Windsor, ON to play the St. Clair Saints on Saturday at 3 p.m.

The game will be available to view on OCAA Live.

The Headline:

After starting the season with five consecutive wins, Mohawk has seen their last five end with unfavourable results. It won't get any easier against the Saints who come into the match tied for the second-best record in the OCAA West Division.

The Matchup:

With a 5-5 record the Mountaineers sit in the middle of their division, while the Saints are on a three-game winning streak, and improved their record to 8-2.

St. Clair as a team statically sits top-seven in hitting percentage, kills, blocks, aces and digs. The Mountaineers will look to re-establish their offense against one of the best teams in their division.

What Happened Last Time:

In a home contest against the Saints back on November 12, the Mountaineers came away victorious 3-1 (24-26, 25-23, 25-23, 25-20).

It was one of the most complete team-efforts of the season from Mohawk. Lexie Zicari (Burlington, ON) led the way with 17 kills, Rachel Vanderwal (Hamilton, ON) added 14 and Stephanie Karatsolias (Milton, ON) had 10. As a team they had a .326 kill percentage – a season-best for Mohawk.

Yvonne Mann (Kitchener, ON) had a season-high 36 assists in the game.

St. Clair received 10 kills from both Ashley Maleyko and Geneva Huisman in the contest.

Who to Watch For:

In the match against the Redeemer Royals earlier this week, the Mountaineers received solid games from Vanderwal and Irene Jaramillo (Manizales, CO) at the middle position. Those two stepping up once again will be key for Mountaineers success.

While Mohawk will look to improve their offensive game, they'll need to watch the strong hands of Huisman, who ranks fourth in the OCAA with 0.7 blocks per set and has 28 total blocks.

What's Next:

Mohawk returns home next weekend when they host Boreal Vipers on Friday and the Cambrian Golden Shield on Saturday.
