Seven Mountaineers women's volleyball athletes receive year-end awards

Ahead of the OCAA Final Four, seven Mohawk Mountaineers women's volleyball athletes have been recognized for their play during the 2021/22 campaign.

Setter Amanda Kuiper (Woodstock, ON), outside hitter Kaelyn Emslie (St. Catharines, ON), right side hitter Julia Watson (Burlington, ON), libero Anika Gatto (Vancouver, BC), and middle blockers Irene Jaramillo Restrepo (Manizales, Colombia) and Rachel Vanderwal (Hamilton, ON) were all named OCAA West Division Second-Team All-Stars.

The Mountaineers represented six of the seven Second-Team All-Star spots in the West. 

As well, Vanderwal and outside hitter Sofia Spolar (Hamilton, ON) were named to the OCAA All-Rookie Team.

A team leader both on and off the court, Kuiper led the OCAA with 9.92 assists per set and was third in total assists with 258. Kuiper's 52 digs also ranked in the top-50 of the conference. Furthermore, her 18 service aces this season moved her into second all-time for career aces in the OCAA.

Emslie led the OCAA this season with 0.93 aces per set and was third with 25 total aces. She also led the Mountaineers with 63 kills and 89 total points, and was second on the team with 65 digs.

Watson provided the Mountaineers with a team best 2.7 kills per set, which also ranked ninth in the OCAA. She also was second on the team with 62 kills. Watson as well contributed 33 digs, nine aces and five blocks.

Gatto was a leader for the Mountaineers defensively. She ranked 12th in the OCAA with 2.75 digs per set and led the team with 66 total digs.

Restrepo was a big addition for the Mountaineers this season. She provided 50 kills on 2.08 kills per set, had 17 aces and 11 blocks.

Vanderwal is the first women's volleyball player at Mohawk to receive both an All-Star nod and be named to the All-Rookie Team since 2017/18. The first-year ranked 10th in the conference with 0.64 blocks per set and led the team with 14 total blocks. She also contributed 45 kills and 2.05 kills per set.

Spoljar was the athlete on the Mountaineers that not only had fantastic statistics, but also contributed a lot to the team that didn't appear in the box sheet. The first-year was third on the team with 51 kills and second with 2.55 kills per set, and had 44 digs and 2.2 digs per set.

The Mountaineers will compete in the OCAA Final Four on Mar. 16 at 6 p.m. in Oshawa versus the Durham Lords.
