Women's volleyball add three newcomers for 2021

Matthew Schnarr and the Mountaineers women's volleyball program have announced their 2021 recruiting class which includes three new student-athletes.

Two of the new additions, Megan Sweet and Stephanie Karatsolias, are true freshman coming out of high school while Lexie Zicari graduated in 2020. This talented crop of young players will compliment the veteran squad very well and the coaching staff is eager to see this group together.

"We are excited to announce our recruiting class for the 2021 season; albeit it being a small class, we believe these three athletes will add tremendous character and depth to our program," says Coach Schnarr.

In 2019-2020 the team went 11-7 and with several of those players still returning to campus in 2021-2022, the three newcomers will have plenty of leadership and guidance to lean on throughout their rookie season.

Here's what the 2021 women's volleyball recruiting class looks like:

Lexie Zicari

  • High School: Nelson High School
  • Club Team: Redline Volleyball
  • Height: 5-foot-11
  • Position: Left side
  • Program of Study: Recreation Therapy

Why did you choose Mohawk?

"I chose Mohawk because I loved the intensity and the inclusivity of the team as well as the overall environment of the campus. I can't wait to further my studies at Mohawk in the near future!"

Coach Schnarr's comments: "Lexie Zicari is an athlete I was after two years ago and am finally excited to get to see her in our Mountaineer Orange. Her passion alone for the sport of volleyball excites me and will be infectious in our program. Her upside on the offensive side of the ball will help our attack and translate well in the OCAA/CCAA. I believe she has the potential to be an all star in this league if she puts the work in!"

Megan Sweet

  • High School: Osgoode Township High School
  • Club Team: Ottawa Maverick
  • Height: 5-foot-4
  • Position: Libero
  • Program of Study: Health Science

Why did you choose Mohawk?

"I have a long-time connection with volleyball coach, Matt Schnarr, and I wanted to play for him. Mohawk has the academic program I am interested in studying and Mohawk is my dad's alma mater!"

Coach Schnarr's comments: "Megan Sweet is a recruit I have gotten to know of the years through experiences at Camp Madawaska. Megan has an ability to leave an impression on everyone she meets. While I believe her personality and character will bring immense value to our team, Megan is a baller on the court. When she is determined, she has very good ball control skills that will translate to the defensive side of the ball at the next level."

Stephanie Karatsolias

  • High School: Craig Kielburger Secondary School
  • Club Team: Georgetown Impact
  • Height: 5-foot-9
  • Position: Outside Hitter
  • Program of Study: Police Foundations

Why did you choose Mohawk?

"I chose Mohawk because of its great police foundations programs that offers a co-op component. On top of that, I wanted to play for Mohawk's women's varsity volleyball team because I know Coach Schnarr is an amazing coach."

Coach Schnarr's comments: "Stephanie Karatsolias comes to us from the Georgetown Impact Volleyball Club, who was one of the top 10 clubs in the province in her U17 season. When initially evaluating Stephanie, I need to take some more time to watch her game film, I quickly realized that Stephanie's length and athleticism could help our program tremendously. I believe she is only scratching the surface on her potential."
