A strong offensive performance by Mohawk Mountaineers women's soccer led to a 7-0 win over the Loyalist Lancers to finish up the 2022 exhibition schedule.

The Mountaineers program had not scored seven goals in a single game since the 2016 season.

Mohawk came out in the first half with lots of pressure, firing 14 shots, four of which led to a goal. First-year Aliya Cardona started the scoring in the 17th minute, followed by Ryenn Jans adding one in the 24th and Paige Epp scored her second exhibition goal in the 30th minute. Jans would add another before halftime.

"Scoring two goals felt good," Jans said. "I'm excited about the upcoming season and this result is good to look forward to the season."

The Mountaineers offensive pressure continued in the second half. Erica Cupiraggi, another new addition to the roster this season, made it 4-0 in the 50th minute. Abi Woods tacked on in the 61st minute and Alyssa Glasbergen got her second goal of preseason to end the scoring in the 65th minute.

"I think we have moved the ball better as preseason has progressed. We are doing better in the final third, keeping teams pinned at their ends," said Mohawk head coach, Paul Giannini. "I also think the defence is doing a good job, anticipating and playing when we have too."

The Mountaineers open regular season play on the road versus the St. Clair Saints on Sept. 9. The women play at 5 p.m. and the men will follow at 7 p.m.

This season all Mohawk home games will be played at Tim Hortons Field beginning on Sept. 14 versus the Redeemer Royals. Admission into the stadium is free.
