Mountaineers women’s soccer drop preseason opener to Thunderbirds

Mohawk women's soccer versus Algoma
By: Julian Orlando

A late goal generated from a free kick was the difference as Mohawk Mountaineers women's soccer fell 1-0 in their preseason opener to the Algoma Thunderbirds of the Ontario University Athletics.

Both teams played mostly in the middle of the field during the first half of the game. Although there were some flashes of individual brilliance, there were no shots on goal in the first 45 minutes.

Mohawk head coach, Paul Giannini, said despite the few training sessions, the team performed well.

"We have had one training session before (this match), so it was a good team effort," Giannini said. "Everybody stepped up and did well."

The Mountaineers had three dangerous shots on goal in the second half and managed to give the Thunderbirds a scare after Kimberly Brinker took a free kick that hit the crossbar.

The Thunderbirds also had three scoring opportunities, with the best coming near the 90th minute when they would score off a rebound from a free kick.

Giannini highlighted areas Mohawk could improve with two more exhibition matches remaining.

"Fitness will always be something you will have to work hard at," Giannini said. " If this group stays healthy and fit, we can do fine."

The Mountaineers will get their first taste of Tim Hortons Field this year when they next host the George Brown Huskies on Aug. 31 at 6 p.m.
