Mountaineers OCAA playoff run ends with loss to Wolves

Mohawk Mountaineers will turn their attention to the CCAA National Championship after a 69-53 loss to the Algonquin Wolves eliminated them from OCAA playoffs.

The Mountaineers as the host school earn an automatic spot into the National tournament, which will be held at Mohawk between March 15-19.

Entering the OCAA qualifying round, the Wolves were the number one seed from the OCAA East division and held an undefeated 14-0 record from the regular season.

Early on the Mountaineers kept it close, only trailing 14-13 with 2:20 left in the first quarter, but the Wolves went on a 4-0 run to close out the opening 10 minutes. Algonquin would extend the run to 9-0 to start the second.

Mohawk tried to chip away at the big deficit in the final quarter, winning the fourth 14-4, but time was not on their side.

Lauren Snider (Brantford, ON) led the Mountaineers with 12 points and Celina Chung (Toronto, ON) came off the bench for 11. Angong Jacob (Calgary, AB) and Rachel Guanzon (Guelph, ON) contributed 10 each.

Schedule for the CCAA Nationals will be finalized once all collegiate conference playoffs are completed.
