A big third quarter for Mohawk Mountaineers women's basketball wasn't enough as they fell to the Niagara Knights 61-42.

It was a slow start for the Mountaineers as they were held to 14 points for the entire first half, and went into the locker trailing by 13.

"Niagara did a pretty good job mimicking us defensively," Mohawk assistant coach Evan St. Hilaire said. "Our offense has always been a problem, so that is something we need to tighten up this week for the next game.

The third quarter saw Mohawk more than double their first half point total and cut the lead to four, but they were then outscored 23-8 in the final frame.

For the game the Mountaineers shot 20.3 per cent from the field compared to the Knights 24.7 per cent.

St. Hilaire highlights the team's performance during the third quarter.

"During half time, the main focus was to flip the switch, and we did flip the switch by bringing the game to about three or four," St Hilaire said.

Mohawk's Celina Chung (Oakville, ON) led the team with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Mountaineers (1-2) return to action on Feb. 24 on the road versus the Sheridan Bruins with tipoff at 6 p.m.
