The Mountaineers women's basketball team defeated the George Brown Huskies 59-52 in exhibition play.

Mohawk led the entire game and held the Huskies to just seven points in the second quarter.

It was Mohawk's first win of the preseason and Hali Burns first as Mountaineers head coach.

Burns saw improvement in the team's play from their previous games so far this preseason.

"I felt that we didn't show our true potential as a team in our first game back from over a year layoff due to COVID," Burns said. "We had a lot of good moments and a lot of moments that we will learn from and grow as a team.

"I feel confident we are on an uphill climb and will be where we need to be entering the regular season in January."

It was a good team effort with 10 different Mountaineers recording a rebound and eight recording points. Tianna Stys led the charge with 22 points and 12 rebounds.

"The most important thing for our team that we have been working on entering the season after over a year of sitting out is team chemistry on the court, conditioning and preparing them for competition," Burns said.

The Mountaineers will next host Canadian Mennonite University on Nov. 12 in the DBARC. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Please note that at this time only Mohawk students and staff are permitted spectators.
