Mountaineers advance to OCAA semifinals with 3-0 sweep of Grizzlies

Mohawk Mountaineers men's volleyball defeated the Georgian Grizzlies 3-0 (25-19, 26-24, 25-13) in an OCAA quarter-final match and have advanced to the conference semifinals.

Majority of the match was dominated by the Mountaineers, who were led by OCAA Player of the Game Anthony Beijes (Hamilton, ON). The third-year outside hitter had a game-high 16 kills with an attack average of 50 per cent.

Head coach Brad McClure credited a balanced offense for Mohawk's victory.

"Our offence kept them off balance and service pressure made the match manageable for our blockers," McClure said.

The Mountaineers as a team had 10 blocks, led by Ethan May's (Dunville, ON) four.

Despite dominating for most of the match, the Grizzlies started to show some pressure in the second set, putting Mohawk on the brink of a set loss. The Mountaineers were able to turn it around and head for the clean sweep.

"We needed more engagement from our guys at that moment," McClure said, reflecting on the second set. "It worked out in favour."

Peter Pilling (St. Catharines, ON) helped the Mohawk offense with 30 assists. Turner Neame (Hamilton, ON) defensively helped with 13 digs.

The Mountaineers will now play in the OCAA semi-final match for the first time since 2016-17. Their opponent will be the defending OCAA Champion Humber Hawks. The match is set for 6 p.m. at Fanshawe College.
