Mountaineers men’s volleyball take home hardware at 2022-23 OCAA Banquet

Mohawk Mountaineers men's volleyball racked up four individual awards at the 2022-23 OCAA Banquet on Wednesday night, with three members named all-stars and one honoured as an all-rookie.

Turner Neame (Hamilton, ON) was named an OCAA West Division First-Team All-Star, while teammates Anthony Beijes (Hamilton, ON) and Joel Sloots (Hamilton, ON) were honoured to the OCAA West Division Second-Team. First-year setter Peter Pilling (St. Catharines, ON) was rewarded to the OCAA West Division All-Rookie Team.

The four individual conference awards are the most Mohawk men's volleyball has received since the 2016-17 season when the team won the OCAA Championship.

Neame has continued a tremendous OCAA career after being named an All-Rookie last season. This season in 17 matches the second-year finished with 197 digs and 2.98 digs per set, both being third-best in the conference and personal-bests.

With the 197 digs, Neame set a new Mountaineer record for most digs in a single-season. Topping the previous record by 55 digs. The 2.98 digs per set are also a new single-season record at Mohawk.

Beijes was one of the best offensive players in the conference this season, finishing with 215 kills and 3.31 kills per set – ranking fifth and third best in the OCAA. The third-year had a .304 attack percentage which ranked seventh best in the conference. Beijes also had 16 service aces and 25 blocks during the season.

Sloots was also impressive this season after coming off All-Rookie honours a year ago. The second-year had career-highs with 11 kills, 1.79 kills per set, 11 service aces, 61 digs and 25 blocks.

Coming off a strong rookie season, Pilling was among some of the best setters in the OCAA. His 447 assists ranked eighth in the OCAA. Pilling also averaged 6.57 assists per set, and finished the season with 35 kills, 116 digs and 28 blocks. He finished with 25 or more assists in a single-match 12 times this season, including in the OCAA crossover playoff round.

The Mountaineers now gear up to play in the OCAA quarterfinals for the first-time since 2016-17. Mohawk will play the Georgian Grizzlies on Feb. 23 at 3 p.m. at Fanshawe College.
