In their final exhibition game ahead of regular season play, Mohawk Mountaineers men's soccer picked up a 1-0 win over the George Brown Huskies at Tim Hortons Field.

The match was strongly dominated by the Huskies, a team who a year ago earned a berth to the CCAA Nationals. George Brown generated 12 shots in the opening 45 minutes to Mohawk's one. the visiting team managed to control most of the first half, generating 12 clear scoring chances, while Mohawk only generated one.

At halftime the score remained tied at 0-0.

Mohawk head coach, Jordan Brown, highlighted the Mountaineers efforts to defend.

"We had to defend a little bit at times, but we defended well," Brown said. "We've limited their chances to nothing really dangerous for us, which is good."

The Huskies were still in control in the second half, but the Mountaineers chemistry flowed comfortable.

"In the second half, we grew into the game and started moving the ball, creating a few chances," Brown said. "I think it is good to finish the pre-season this way."

As the final whistle was approaching, first-year Nicholas Tavares managed to score the only goal of the game in the 88th minute after heading in a cross from the right side of the field.

"Scoring today is especially amazing," Simms said. " When I first got here (Tim Hortons Field), I couldn't believe how big it actually was, and the momentum of the goal was just amazing."

With preseason finished for the Mountaineers, they will prepare to travel to Acumen Stadium for their regular season opener versus the St. Clair Saints on Sept. 9 at 7 p.m.

The Mountaineers home opener will take place Sept. 14 when they host the Redeemer Royals. Women's game begins at 6 p.m. and men at 8 p.m. Entry to Tim Hortons Field is free for everyone.
