Mohawk Mountaineers men's basketball was crowned the 2022-23 OCAA bronze medalists following a 99-92 win over the Lambton Lions. The medal is the first for the program since the 2015-16 season.

"Words can't describe it," said head coach Brian Jonker.

The 17-year coach explained that Mohawk began to find their style of play in the fourth quarter of the OCAA semi-final game from Saturday and it carried over to the bronze game a day later.

"To comeback with so many different issues today, many different people got to contribute," Jonker said. "I'm elated."

The Mountaineers took a one-point lead over the Lions in the first quarter and then turned it up a notch in the second, making six threes to go up 49-35 at halftime.

In the third quarter Mohawk would extend their lead to a game-high 26, but Lambton began to find their shooting touch as the second half progressed. With 4:26 left in the game, the Mountaineers lead vanished with the Lions taking a one-point advantage. After a minute of back-and-forth play, Mohawk would regain momentum to take a permanent lead for the win.

"We found a way to fight and stuck together," Jonker said. "That's really what we've done all year. Resiliency, that's what we're about."

Jerry Jr. Mercury (Scarborough, ON) was named an OCAA Championship Tournament All-Star, playing three fantastic games. Versus the Lions, Mercury had a game-high 30 points and 16 rebounds. Rommel Calura (Hamilton, ON) joined in on the double-double fun with 19 points and 11 rebounds, also adding five assists.

Cale Calura (Hamilton, ON) had 19 and Stefan Anisko (Haldimand County, ON) chipped in 18.

The Mohawk men's basketball program has now won 20 provincial medals in its history.
