Playoff Preview: No. 12 Mountaineers look to punch their ticket to OCAA Championship tournament

The No. 12 nationally ranked Mohawk Mountaineers men's basketball will host the Algonquin Wolves on Feb. 25 in an OCAA qualifying round matchup inside the David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre.

Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. and the game can also be streamed on OCAA Live.

The Matchup:

A 14-4 regular season record clinched the Mountaineers the number two seed in the OCAA West division. Despite being the best offense all season long, Mohawk closed out the season with two straight losses and will look to turn their momentum with a playoff win.

Algonquin finished the regular season with an 8-10 record and grabbed the seventh seed in the OCAA East. They ended the season with losses in four of their final five games.

Playoff History:

The last time the Mountaineers won an OCAA playoff game was March 5, 2016 when they defeated the Lambton Lions and advanced to the championships, ultimately winning a silver medal.

Mohawk did make the playoff last season, but ran into the eventual OCAA champion Humber Hawks.

A season ago the Wolves found themselves in an OCAA quarterfinal game but that is as far as they would go. They last won an OCAA medal in the 2013-14 season.

What Happened Last Time:

Digging into the history books, Mohawk and Algonquin last played on February 28, 2013. It was a quarterfinal game that saw the Mountaineers win 69-62 and eventually go on to win an OCAA silver medal.

What's Next:

The winner of this game will end to St. Clair College for the OCAA Championship tournament and play the winner between the Humber Hawks and Seneca Sting in the quarterfinals on Mar. 3.
