Game Preview: No. 4 Mountaineers look to revenge lone loss of the season

No. 4 Mohawk Mountaineers men's basketball will get their chance to revenge their only loss of the season when they face the Conestoga Condors on Thursday night at 8 p.m.

The game will be available to watch through OCAA Live.

The Matchup:

Conestoga is the only team to defeat Mohawk so far this season. The Mountaineers hold a 10-1 record, sit first in the OCAA West and moved up one spot in the CCAA National rankings this past week to number four.

The Condors come into the game having lost their last two games, dropping their record to 7-5. They currently sit in a three-way tie for fourth in the west division.

What Happened Last Time:

In the November contest that saw Mohawk fall on their home court 118-94 to Conestoga, the Mountaineers had one of their worst shooting nights of the season. Known as a three-point shooting team – Mohawk currently leads the OCAA in points per game – the Mountaineers shot nine-of-31 from three while also playing without the Calura brothers, Rommel and Cale.

Credit where credit is due: the Condors did play a strong game, shooting 56.2 per cent from the field as a team. Terell Lloyd led Conestoga with 38-points while Ladera Ujullu-Obang had a double-double of 24 points and 11 rebounds.

Who to Watch For:

As mentioned above the previous game between these two was played without both Calura brothers, who have both started in nine of the Mountaineers 11 games this season. Rommel, the eldest of the two, is fourth on the Mohawk roster in points per game and averages 3.5 threes per game.

Cale can act as a primary ballhandler for the Mountaineers, particularly in moments Daniel Graham (Hamilton, ON) is off the court. The second-year guard averages 11.3 points per game and is a key defensively for Mohawk.

Of course, Lloyd and Ujullu-Obang will be important for Conestoga. Lloyd leads the conference at 26.1 points per game, while Ujullu-Obang is second at 25.8 points.

What's Next:

The schedule has the Mountaineers staying on the road after this game. They head to London, ON on Jan. 28 to play the Fanshawe Falcons at 7 p.m.
