Mountaineers men's basketball fell to the George Brown Huskies 88-76 in a gritty and physical preseason matchup.

A rough third quarter was ultimately the difference in the game when Mohawk was outscored 28-18 versus the 2019/20 OCAA Champions. The Huskies held a 23 point advantage in the fourth quarter, but Mohawk was able to cut the lead to 10.

The Mountaineers effort didn't go unnoticed by head coach Brian Jonker who had lots of good things to say about his team.

"I think for the most part we competed tonight," Jonker said. "We're undersized right now and drastically undersized when Isaac Graham gets into foul trouble. They're obviously bigger and created a lot of problems on the boards, but I thought we competed, and we definitely didn't give up, so those are good signs."

George Brown outscored Mohawk in the paint 46-28.

Mohawk shot 71 per cent from the free throw line but 29.5 per cent from the field.

Rommel Calura led the Mountaineers with 26 points and 8 rebounds, while Daniel Graham added 21 points.

"I thought brothers Rommel and Cale Calura competed really well," Jonker said. "Daniel played hard, and I think in general we just competed and that's a positive for today."

Mountaineers will next host the Canadian Mennonite University from Winnipeg on Nov. 12 in the DBARC Gymnasium. Game time is scheduled for 8 p.m.

Please note that at this time only Mohawk students and staff are permitted spectators.
