HAMILTON, ON - The retooling of the Mohawk Mountaineers women's softball program continues to add excitement ahead of the 2023 season with the addition of three more recruits.

Over the last several months since the new coaching staff took over, the Mountaineers have added a combined eight new members to the upcoming roster. Head coach Chris McColl admitted that it is pretty amazing how it has all come together.

"From a short time ago questioning whether we'd have a roster to now an exceptional roster that's going to compete with everybody is just fantastic," McColl said.

The three newest student-athletes expands the Mohawk pitching depth with Rachel Lee and Maggie Lupton joining the squad, while Shelby Todd will be a strong addition to the middle of the diamond. Both Lee and Lupton will also be utility players around the diamond when needed.

Lee joins the Mountaineers from Drayton, ON where she attended Norwell District Secondary and played club with the Plamerston Marlins. The left-handed pitcher got to compete at Nationals with the Marlins in both 2016 and 2017, where in the former year she helped her team to a Smitty's C Division gold medal in Winnipeg, MB.

"Any time you can add a left-handed pitcher to your roster it adds a little something special," McColl said. "She's going to do a great job for us on the mound."

Lupton is a local from Binbrook, ON, spending her high school years at Saltfleet District and playing club-level in both Ancaster, ON and Burlington, ON. She has the ability to pitch, play first base and move around to other infield positions.

"Maggie has surprised us and she's going to help this team in a lot of ways," McColl said. "She's going to help us in the infield; she's very versatile and she's quick."

Todd, out of Ingersoll, ON, will fill out second base for Mohawk after attending Ingersoll District Collegiate Institute and playing club with the Dorchester Diamondback.

"Shelby is an athlete," McColl said. "She's going to give us endurance and grit."

Starting in September, Lee will be enrolled at Mohawk in the Small Business program, Lupton will study Art and Design Foundations and Todd will study Recreation Therapy.
