The Mohawk Mountaineers women's softball program is excited to make an addition to its coaching staff by announcing Skyler Bennett as the newest assistant coach. Skyler brings with her tremendous playing experience at both the club and OCAA level, while also adding coaching to her resume the last few years.

Bennett is most-known for her softball playing days with the St. Clair Saints, but her love for the sport began at a young age. She started playing softball at the house league level with the Guelph Gators organization before making the jump to the Professional Women's Softball Association, playing for the Brampton Blazers and Toronto Fastpitch.

During four seasons (2013-2017) with the Saints, Bennett was named an OCAA All-Star each year, twice won OCAA Player of the Year and OCAA Top Batter. Her individual success helped guide the Saints to an OCAA Championship in 2014-15 and silver medals in 2013-14 and 2016-17.

Despite not medalling provincially in 2015-16, Bennett and the Saints won gold at the Canadian Collegiate Softball Association (CCSA) National Championship, while also capturing a silver in 2014-15 and bronze in 2013-14.

Bennett joins a Mountaineers coaching staff that has over 100 combined years of softball experience led by head coach Chris McColl.

"I have had the great pleasure of playing for and against this coaching staff, and they have done more than enough for me in my past softball career," said Bennett. "It's truly an honour that I'm able to coach with these legends and I know for a fact they will take this Mohawk program to new heights."

"For everything these guys have done for me it was an easy decision to accept the offer (to coach). It's my turn to giveback and share my success and knowledge with these young group of girls," added Bennett.

The former athlete turned coach spent 2020-2022 as an assistant with the U14 Palmerston Marlins and has one previous coaching year in the OCAA as an assistant with the Conestoga Condors during the 2021-2022 season.

"Skyler is a huge addition to our coaching staff, and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the program" McColl said. "Having a former softball player like Skyler on the staff is invaluable to the student-athletes and their growth."

Bennett joins assistants Mike Smuk and Alan Spohn, Jim Nemish on the Mohawk staff.
