Mohawk Mountaineers men's curling concluded the 2023 season by winning the bronze medal at the CCAA National Championship in Sudbury, ON.

The Mountaineers played to a 6-1 record in round robin, earning the top seed heading into the semi-final round on Sunday.

Mohawk would run into the SAIT Trojans in the semi-final match. The Trojans were the only team to beat the Mountaineers in pool play, handing Mohawk their only loss of the entire season.

SAIT jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the first three ends. The Mountaineers would start to play catch-up, scoring two in the fourth and three in the fifth to cut the Trojans lead to one.

However, SAIT would go another run with two points in the sixth and one each in the seventh and eighth.

Mohawk would have to rally big in the ninth down 10-5 to have any shot at forcing a 10th end. The Mountaineers would only come away with two and lose 10-7.

In the bronze medal match, Mohawk would play the Sault Cougars. Prior to this one the Mountaineers had won three matches versus the Cougars this year.

Mohawk would score a point each in the first two ends to go up 2-0. Sault would then get on the board with one of their own in the fourth, but the Mountaineers answered with two in the fifth.

The Cougars would add a single point in the sixth and eighth ends, but the Mountaineers scored two and three in the seventh and ninth ends to secure a 9-3 win.

Jacob Jones (Brantford, ON), Liam Little ((Hailburton, ON) and Joel Matthews (Waterdown, ON) were named First-Team Championship All-Stars. Eric Just (Ancaster, ON) was named a Second-Team Championship All-Star.

The bronze medal is the Mountaineers first at the National level since winning silver in 2017.

Mohawk also claimed the OCAA Championship earlier this year, winning the provincial title for the second consecutive year.
