WELLAND, ON – A perfect round robin by Mohawk Mountaineers men's curling qualified them for the OCAA Championship semifinals, while the mixed doubles team played to a 3-2 record and will also be competing in the semis.

For the Mountaineer men their 4-0 record earned them the top seed in their division.

They began the tournament with two-wins on Thursday and added another couple victories Friday over the Fleming Knights and Sault Cougars.

Mohawk made quick work of Fleming, winning the match in just four ends. The Mountaineers scored three in the first end, another two in the second and added three in the fourth to win 8-1.

Sault was a tougher matchup as the Cougars went up 2-0 after the first two ends. Mohawk would take the lead in the third end with three points only for Sault to tie it 3-3 after four ends.

The Mountaineers would get two in the fifth and the Cougars answered with two of their own in the sixth before Mohawk picked up a massive four points in the seventh end to win 9-5.

Mohawk's mixed doubles team had a tough start to their day. The Mountaineers would lose 6-4 to the Confederation Thunderhawks (2) which brought Mohawk's record to 1-2.

The match began with the Mountaineers picking up a point in the opening end, but the Thunderhawks would go up 5-1 after four ends. Mohawk would chip away to make it 5-4 after seven, but Confederation would get the final point in the eighth end.

The loss meant the Mountaineers needed to win their final two matches if they wanted any hope of advancing to the semis. They would do so by defeating the Niagara Knights first team 10-8 and the Knights second team 8-5.

In the match versus the Knights (1) the Mountaineers took a massive 8-1 lead after three ends. The Knights (1) would answer with four in the fourth end and then tie it 8-8 after six. Mohawk would get one in the seventh end and a clutch shot by Ashley Verhees (Elmwood, ON) sealed the deal in the eighth end.

The Mountaineers would once again take an early lead against the Knights (2) with three in the first end, but Niagara scored four in the second. Mohawk would score in the next four ends to take an 8-4 advantage and eventually the win.

Both Mountaineer teams will play their semifinals match on Feb. 11 at 9 a.m. The men's team will play the Fleming Knights and mixed doubles will be matched up against the Humber Hawks.
