Mountaineers men’s curling off to perfect start; mixed doubles splits on opening day

WELLAND, ON – Following the conclusion of day one at the OCAA Championships, Mohawk Mountaineers men's curling is off to a perfect 2-0 start. Mohawk's mixed doubles team dropped their round robin opener, but bounced back in a big way to close out the day with a win.

Both Mountaineer teams are defending the top spot after winning OCAA gold at the 2022 OCAA Championships.

The Mohawk men's team started the day playing the Humber Hawks – in what was a rematch of last years finals.

It would be the Hawks who would jump out in front, stealing a point in the first end. The Mountaineers would take a 2-1 lead after the second end and would not relinquish after that.

Mohawk would grab another point in the fourth end and two more in the sixth, but Humber came back with three points in the seventh. The Mountaineers would hold on in the eighth end, scoring a point on with their final rock, to win 6-4.

In their second game of the day, Mohawk dominated the Fanshawe Falcons for a 10-0 win. The Mountaineers would go up 2-0 after the first end, add another in the second before scoring three and four in the fourth and fifth ends.

Mixed doubles also started their day off in a rematch from the 2022 OCAA gold medal game, also playing the Hawks. Humber jumped out to a 5-0 lead after four ends before Mohawk would get on the board with one of their own in the fifth.

The Mountaineers would make things interesting after the sixth end, cutting the Hawks lead to 5-3. Ultimately, it would go Humber's way with Mohawk losing 8-3.

In match two of the day, the Mountaineers played a back and forth match against the Confederation Thunderhawks (1). With Confederation up 2-0 after one end, Mohawk chipped away to grab a 4-3 lead after six. The Mountaineers would add two in the seventh end to win 6-3.

Both teams are back at it Friday morning as round robin play continues. Mohawk men's team will play the Fleming Knights at 9:30 a.m. and the Sault Cougars at 6:30 p.m. Mountaineers mixed doubles will have a three-game day starting at 9:30 a.m. versus the Confederation Thunderhawks (2), then they play the Niagara Knights (1) at 1:30 p.m. and Niagara Knights (2) at 6:30 p.m.
