Preparations are underway for Mohawk Mountaineers men's curling as they will look to defend the OCAA crown in February at the provincial championships.

This past weekend the Mountaineers participated in a bonspiel featuring some of Ontario's top universities - hosted by McMaster University at the Dundas Valley Golf and Curling Club – where Mohawk came away with victories in four of their five matches.

The Mountaineers were one of three teams to not lose all tournament, along with the Toronto Metropolitan Bold and the Laurier Golden Hawks, but the difference between Mohawk winning the tournament and finishing third in the overall standings was one tie against the York Lions.

Mohawk opened the two-day bonspiel with a 9-6 victory over the Western Mustangs, which was followed by the 6-6 tie against the Lions. From there on out, the Mountaineers would win the rest of their games, including 7-3 over the Trent Excalibur to end day one.

On Sunday, Mohawk would defeat the Toronto Varsity Blues 7-5 and end the tournament with a dominating 7-1 victory over the Ontario Tech RidgeBacks.

This tournament was the Mountaineers first action to begin 2023.

Up next for men's curling will include playing in the Hamilton and District Bonspiel beginning Tuesday evening. They'll get a taste of OCAA competition during the January 27 weekend when they participate in the Niagara Bonspiel.

The OCAA Championships take place February 9-11, also hosted by Niagara College.
