The Mohawk Mountaineers curling program is bringing home double gold and numerous individual awards after being crowned OCAA champions in Sault Ste. Marie.

Both the Mohawk men's program and mixed doubles team came through with wins in their gold medal matches on Feb. 21.

The men's team defeated the Humber Hawks 5-4 in their championship match. The Hawks came into the game undefeated, while the Mountaineers went 3-2 in round robin play.

It is the first time the Mountaineers men's team has captured provincial gold in 24 years, last winning in 1998.

In the mixed doubles finals Mohawk defeated Humber (2) 8-0. The Mountaineers had finished round robin 3-1 and as the top seed, while the Hawks also finished 3-1.

Mixed doubles competition returned to the OCAA championships in 2020, making this the first time since the return Mohawk has won. However, the Mountaineers last won gold in mixed doubles in 2008.

Second-year skip Jacob Jones (Brantford, ON) was named Most Valuable Player in the men's competition, as well as a First-Team Championship All-Star. Liam Little (Haliburton, ON), in his first year with Mohawk, was also named First-Team Championship All-Star. Brothers Jarrett Matthews (Waterdown, ON) and Joel Matthews (Waterdown, ON) were named Second-Team Championship All-Stars.

Ashley Verhees (Elmwood, ON) and Eric Just (Hamilton, ON), who made up the Mountaineers mixed doubles team, were named Most Valuable Players in their competition.

Mohawk men's head coach Betty Calic and mixed doubles head coach Matthew Kimber were named OCAA Coach of the Year's in their respective competitions.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Curling Canada cancelled the CCAA National Championships that were set to take place in Sudbury in March.
