Mohawk Mountaineers will be playing for double gold at the OCAA Championships after both the men's team and mixed doubles team advanced to the finals following day three of the tournament.

After starting round robin with a 2-1 record through two days, the Mountaineers mixed doubles team dominated the Humber Hawks (1) on Sunday (Feb. 20) with a 13-0 win in six ends.

The 3-1 record in round robin play placed Mohawk in first place in their division, which meant an automatic bye to the gold medal match. The Mountaineers will play Humber (2) for the championships.

Mohawk and Humber (2) split their two round robin matchups, with the Mountaineers winning the first game 8-6 and the Hawks squeezing out the second by a score of 7-6.

Entering day three of the tournament with a 2-2 record, the Mountaineers men's team was in a must-win scenario if they wanted to advance to the semi-final round.

Mohawk would play the Fanshawe Falcons in their final round robin match and it was the Mountaineers who would score an early two points in the first end to take the lead.

Following five ends Mohawk grew their lead to 5-2. Fanshawe would then score a point each in the sixth and seventh end but a point in the eighth end for Mohawk was enough for a 6-4 victory.

In the semi-finals Mohawk would get a rematch versus the Confederation Thunder Hawks, after losing to them back on day one of the tournament.

It was another close match, with the Thunder Hawks leading 1-0 after two ends. The Mountaineers then found some rhythm and led 4-1 after five ends.

Confederation would put up a four spot in the sixth end to lead 5-4 and put Mohawk in a very tough situation near the end of the match. The Mountaineers were able to take a point in the seventh end to tie the match, and eventually score another point in the eighth to win 6-5 and advance to the championships.

Mohawk will play the Humber Hawks, who went 5-0 in round robin, for gold. The match will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Feb. 21. The Mountaineers men's program last won an OCAA gold in 1997/98.

The mixed doubles gold medal match between Mohawk and Humber (2) will also be played at 9:30 a.m. on Feb. 21. A mixed doubles gold was last won by the Mountaineers in 2007/08.
