Mountaineers curling split matches in Day 2 of OCAA Championships

Mohawk Mountaineers men's and mixed doubles curling teams split both their matches on day two of the OCAA Curling Championships.

The men defeated the Sault Cougars 9-3 to start the day.

Mohawk jumped out in front to a 6-0 lead after four ends. The Cougars scored three of their own in the fifth, but the Mountaineers added three points themselves in the sixth end en route to victory.

In their second match of the day, the Mountaineers and Humber Hawks went back and forth.

After five ends Mohawk and Humber were tied 4-4. The Mountaineers would go up 6-4 after six ends, but the Hawks answered with three in the seventh end. Mohawk answered with one in the eighth end to send it to extras.

It was the Hawks you prevailed for a point to win the match.

Mountaineers men's team is now 2-2 in round robin play with one match left versus the Fanshawe Falcons at 1:30 p.m. on Feb. 20.

The mixed double team also won 9-3 to start the day over the Humber Hawks (1).

Mohawk scored five in the opening end and continued to grow their lead throughout the match to get themselves the win.

The second match versus the Hawks (2) saw another back and forth curling match. Humber led 3-0 after one end, but Mohawk answered to take a 6-3 lead after six ends. The Hawks answered with three points in the seventh and eighth ends before winning in an extra end.

The mixed doubles team is now 2-1 in the tournament, and will play the Hawks (1) at 1:30 p.m. on Feb. 20 prior to the semifinals.
