The return of Mountaineers curling is among the most anticipated returns following a silver medal in 2019-2020 and a pair of those athletes return to campus this upcoming season. Not only does head coach Betty Calic return two veterans in Jarrett Matthews and Jacob Jones, she brings back assistant Matt Kimber who first started on staff as a coach with the women’s curling program back in 2012-2013.
The Mountaineers have announced the 2020-2021 All-Academic athletes which is highlighted by 35 student-athletes. With no competition over the past year, there has been extra emphasis on academic excellence and the Mountaineers were up for the challenge with over 50 per cent of this year’s athletes receiving All-Academic honours.
As the Mountaineers continue to celebrate the accomplishments of our student-athletes, we are excited to announce Jacob Jones of the Curling team as this year’s recipient of the Grace Siu Excellence Scholarship Award and Ken Huynh of the Men’s Rugby team has won the Hap Holman Scholarship Award.
The new era of Mountaineers Athletics and Recreation is in full swing and with another school year looming in the distance, the Mountaineers have announced seven student-athletes who will makeup the inaugural Mountaineer Athlete Ambassadors (MAA) team.
It was a pleasure to honour and highlight all 14 of the Mountaineers graduating athletes over the past three weeks. This crop of players all endured a college experience far different than any other graduating class with the current landscape of college athletics during the pandemic.
The men's curling program enjoyed one of their finest seasons in the past several years as they had their best OCAA finish since 2006-2007, securing a silver medal at the 2020 OCAA Championships.
