Vanderwal, Little named Mountaineer Athletes of the Week

Mohawk Mountaineers are proud to announce Rachel Vanderwal and Liam Little as the Athletes of the Week, in partnership with the Mohawk Students' Association, for the week of Jan. 16 – 22.

Vanderwal (Hamilton, ON) had a career weekend in double-header action that saw Mountaineers women's volleyball sweep the Borèal Vipères and defeat the Cambrian Golden Shield in five sets. In the two matches combined the middle blocker had 24 kills – it is the second time this season Vanderwal has accumulated 24 kills in a two-game span.

In the match versus the Golden Shield, Vanderwal tied her career-high with 14 kills and four blocks, while setting new career-highs with seven digs and five assists, and added three aces.

Little (Hailburton, ON) and men's curling competed against OCAA opponents for the first time this year, finishing 3-0 at the Niagara Bonspiel. A second-year athlete, Little had a team-high 82 per cent shot making percentage. The Mountaineers as a team defeated the Humber Hawks 9-1, won 8-1 versus Sault Cougars and then defeated the Fleming Knights 9-0.

Mountaineers curling will compete at the OCAA Championships between Feb. 9-11.
