OCAA pauses college sports until at least Jan. 21

The Ontario Colleges Athletic Association announced today that it will delay the start of its 2022 varsity winter season until at least Friday, Jan. 21, subject to be reevaluated as per the trajectory of the pandemic.

This decision was made based on a number of factors including the higher transmission rate of the new Omicron variant of COVID-19 and in response to the rest from Ontario Public Health to reduce interactions and impose additional measures.

The pause in play will impact Mohawk Mountaineers basketball, curling and volleyball teams.

All scheduled OCAA league games scheduled in 2022 until Jan. 21 have been postponed. At this time the regular season will likely be altered once a return date is determined.

Mohawk College announced on Wednesday, Dec. 15 that it was making some temporary modifications to its Winter semester plans to ensure the campus community is safe until more is known about the impact of the new variant. This includes continuing with the academic format that has been in place for the Fall semester until Jan. 30. All required in-person learning will continue in January, but all other learning that was to be done in-person will be delivered virtual and remote.

Further updates will be provided as they become available.
