Women's and men's cross country teams named Mountaineers Athletes of the Week

Mohawk Mountaineers are proud to announce both the women's and men's cross country teams as the Athletes of the Week, in conjunction with the Mohawk Students' Association, for the week of Oct. 25 to 31.

The success for both the women and men at the OCAA Championships on Oct. 30 made it very difficult to choose one athlete from both sides. Therefore, the two teams collectively share the honours.

Mohawk's men's team qualified for the national championships following a bronze medal finish at the OCAAs. Jacob Chant, Matias Tessel and Will Summer led the way for the Mountaineers as they placed 13th, 14th and 15th, respectively. Teammates Ben Yalin, Gordon McGinn and Riley Hambly had strong races as well, respectively finishing 20th, 26th and 32nd.

The women as a team placed fourth at the OCAA Championships with three runners qualifying for the CCAA Championships. Annie Sterenberg and Ashley Lof placed in the top 10 with a sixth and ninth place finish, while Stefania Salzer will join those two at nationals after finishing 20th at provincials. Niki Ann Brideau and Anika Gatto placed 33rd and 43rd, respectively.

Mohawk cross country will compete at the CCAA Championships on Nov. 13 in Calgary.

The Mountaineers Athletes of the Week is an initiative put together by Mohawk's athletics and recreation department and the MSA.

Every Monday two new athletes will be chosen for the award and announced here on the Mohawk Mountaineers website. Also, make sure to follow the Mountaineers FacebookTwitter and Instagram pages for additional news, graphics and videos.
