The Mohawk Mountaineers cross country team's ran in their first race of 2022 on Friday morning at the Seneca Sting Invitational, with the women coming away with an overall third place finish and the men placing fifth.
For the first run of the season the Mountaineers focused on practicing their race strategy that focused on pacing and hill tactics.
"Overall, I was impressed with the teams ability to execute the plan - maintaining control when asked and digging in when it was time," said assistant coach Hannah Sukkau. "I'm really pleased with how the group handled themselves over this difficult course, especially our less experienced runners."
Ava Snyder (Burlington, ON) made quite the OCAA debut, placing fifth with a time of 26:56.6 out of 41 women in a 6km race. Teammate Ashley Lof (Beamsville, ON) also finished top-10 individually with a finish time of 28:01.7.
On the men's side, Matias Tessel (Guelph, ON) finished the 8km race in 30:24.6 and placed 12th overall. Will Summers also had a strong performance with a 31:26.8 time and 17th place finish.
Sukkau also highlighted the preformance of first-year Cody Beggs (Belmont, ON), who placed 21st with a time of 32:34.1. In addition, Sukkau credited the teamwork of the women's team.
"We were really excited about their performance putting them only three points behind second place," Sukkau said.
"Coach David (Hopton) and i see a lot of potential with this group and we're all excited for what's to come," Sukkau added.
