Mohawk Mountaineers women's soccer will hold their own destiny for a potential home playoff game following a 2-1 victory over the Redeemer Royals on Friday night.

With the win the Mountaineers currently sit fourth in the OCAA west division with two games remaining.

In the match, the Royals controlled most of the first half with an advantage of five shots to Mohawk's one; however, the one Mountaineer shot resulted in a goal from Alyssa Glasbergen (Burlington, ON) in the 16th minute.

Redeemer did answer a minute later to tie the match 1-1 in the first half.

Mohawk head coach Paul Giannini explained key aspects during the first half.

"I believe we limited Redeemer to three shots toward the goal," Giannini said. "That is key for us."

The intensity picked up in the second half for the Mountaineers, generating six shots. They capitalized in the 57th minute when Aliya Cardona (Stoney Creek, ON) scored her first career OCAA goal.

"Redeemer has an outstanding team this year," Giannini said. "But our girls knew if we stuck to the game plan, stayed calm and move the ball, we would get our chances."

Goalkeeper Samantha DeHaan (Smithville, ON) also had an incredible performance after making six saves against the Royals.

Mohawk will play its final home regular season game on Oct. 12 at 6 p.m. when they host the Sheridan Bruins at Tim Hortons Field.
