Mohawk Mountaineers women's basketball fell to the Redeemer Royals 71-60.

The opening quarter saw an evenly matched two teams before the Royals began to open it up in the second.

In the second half the Mountaineers allowed 26-points in the third quarter before attempting a comeback in the fourth, but could not overcome the deficit.

Mohawk co-head coach, Mihai Raducanu, explained the struggles for the Mountaineers.

"I think we need to improve on our toughness," Raducanu said. "We also need to work on running the floor better and we need to improve on boxing out."

Mohawk's best offensive quarter came in the fourth when they scored 22 as a team.

"The difference is that the girls came out with intensity, they wanted to be there playing," Raducanu said. "They felt the pressure and they wanted to fight and I'm sure if we play as we did in the last quarter, we can win basketball games."

Rachel Guanzon (Guelph, ON) led the Mountaineers with 15-points, including four made threes. Tia Stys (St. Catharines, ON) came away with a double-double of 13-points and 12 rebounds, while Angong Jacob (Calgary, AB) came off the bench to add 14-points and seven rebounds.

Mohawk will look to get their first win of the season on Nov. 12 when they travel to play the Lambton Lions at 6 p.m.
