Mohawk Mountaineers women's basketball could not pull off a late comeback in a 61-55 loss to the Fanshawe Falcons to begin the 2022-23 season.

Both teams struggled offensively in the first quarter, but the Falcons took charge in the second to take a six-point lead into halftime.

Fanshawe would extend their lead to 11 after three quarters. Mohawk was then able to cut into the lead back down to six, but that's as close as they would get.

"It's a tough loss," said co-head coach Ray Williams. "We had great energy in the first and fourth but when it's that close, we need to collectively put an entire game together."

Rachel Guanzon (Guelph, ON) led the Mountaineers with 13 points, and Celina Chung (Toronto, ON) added 12 points and eight rebounds.

Mohawk will be back in action on Nov. 2 when they travel to play the Humber Hawks at 6 p.m.
