An early deficit for men's soccer was enough to end their two game win streak as the Mountaineers fell to the Niagara Knights 2-1.

Mohawk allowed the Knights to score both their goals within the first 10 minutes of the match. Joseph Nagnonhou and Sunao Yamamoto were the Niagara goalscorers.

Head coach Jordan Brown said the Mountaineers got off to a strong start, however an early free kick for the Knights that led to the first goal came as a shock to Mohawk.

"We had some great scoring chances throughout the match," said Brown. "That first goal surprised us and changed a bit of the momentum."

It was late in the second half when the Mountaineers finally capatalized on their scoring opportunities as first-year Hamilton native D'Anthony Simms cut the Knights lead in half.

There just wasn't enough time left for the Mountaineers to mount a comeback.

Mohawk's next game is a must win, according to Brown.

"If we win, we will clinch a playoff spot," Brown said. "It is very important we come out of that game with a victory."

The Mountaineers (2-2) will next play on the road at Dave Mantel Field versus the Redeemer Royals (0-4) for an 8 p.m. start on Saturday, Oct. 2.
