Men's basketball award recipients

Three individuals from the Mohawk Mountaineers men's basketball team were recipients of OCAA year-end awards at the 2022-23 conference banquet on Thursday night, and head coach Brian Jonker was named OCAA West Division Coach of the Year.

Daniel Graham (Hamilton, ON) was named an OCAA West Division, First-Team All-Star and Jerry Jr. Mercury (Scarborough, ON) was honoured as an OCAA West Division, Second-Team All-Star. First-year guard Stefan Anisko (Haldimand County, ON) took home two awards, being named the OCAA West Division Sixth Man of the Year and also being named to the All-Rookie Team.

This is the third time in his three-year career with Mohawk that Graham has received an award from the OCAA, but the first time the guard has received a spot as First-Team All-Star.

Graham ranked sixth in the OCAA with 20.1 points per game, an individual career-high. He also averaged a league-best 3.5 threes per game and led the conference with 63 made threes. A team-leader on and off the court, Graham also averaged 3.9 rebounds, 3.9 assists and a career-best 1.7 steals per game.

Mercury played his second season in the OCAA – first with the Mountaineers – and was contributor both offensively and defensively. In 17 regular season games played the forward averaged 18.8 points per game and an OCAA-best 10.6 rebounds per game. He finished the season with 10 double-doubles, and shot 50.6 per cent from the field, while also averaging 1.8 steals per game.

Anisko took the league by storm in his first season, averaging 20 points per game, ranking seventh best in the OCAA. The guard, who came off the bench in 11 of the 15 games he played, also ranked in the top-10 with a 51.2 field goal percentage and 40 per cent from three.

For Jonker, this is the second time in his 16 seasons at Mohawk that he has been recognized as the OCAA West Division Coach of the Year. He guided the team a 14-4 season, finishing with the second-best record in the OCAA West. Under Jonker's guidance the Mountaineers led the league offensively, averaging 98.9 points per game, and they were the best three-point shooting team at 35 per cent.

Jonker is the all-time winningest head coach in regular season play in Mohawk history with 180 victories. He ranks second in all-time wins (including playoffs) with 194.

Mohawk will compete at the OCAA Championship this weekend beginning with a quarter-final game versus the Humber Hawks on March 3 at 1 p.m. The tournament is taking place at St. Clair College in Windsor, ON.
