Mountaineers softball could not overcome major deficits in doubleheader action in Etobicoke. The Humber Hawks won both games, 15-0 and 13-3.
It was the final two road games for Mohawk this season. Despite going winless away from home and facing some formidable foes, Mountaineers outfielder Megan Daniels remains confident in her team with four remaining games.
"With the few games we have left we definitely want to have more of a presence on the field," Daniels said. "There's a lot of times when a play doesn't go the way we want and we start to beat ourselves up for it. We're good ball players, we just need that reminder sometimes."
Humber pitcher Mikaela Moore was the star in the first game pitching a four-inning no-hit, shutout to beat Mohawk 15-0.
In the second game, Mohawk was able to score multiple runs early but Humber fought back, particularly in the third inning when they scored nine runs on route to a 13-3 win.
Kacie Harrison led the Mountaineers with a 3-for-3 game and a run scored, while Michaela Walker also scored and had a RBI. Emma Harker scored the third Mountaineers run, with Tamiko Chiba and Madison Young being credited with a RBI each.
While facing some difficult losses this season, Harker says her team remains unbothered as they compete against some of the best in the OCAA.
"There is no doubt that they are a great team, but so are we," Harker said. "No matter what the score is, we were always up with our attitudes and positive, which is a win for us."
With four remaining games, Daniels said the team is focused on changing their approach at the plate.
"The coaches talk to us about walking up to the plate with 'swag' and we've been doing that lately," Daniels said. "We've done a lot better job getting on base."
Mohawk will close out their 2021 season with four games in two days.
On Oct. 15, they'll host the Fanshawe Falcons in what is the Mountaineers rescheduled Orange Shirt Game. The games will be played at Mohawk Sports Park at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.
Then on Oct. 16, the Mountaineers will host the Durham Lords for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
